Blue fluorescence from an ensemble of cold cesium atoms in a magneto-optical trap. Use of quadrature squeezed light allows the spin orientation of the trapped atoms to be measured with a sensitivity exceeding the shot-noise limit. The authors describe an apparatus that can be used to create spin-squeezed states of atoms. [See article by J. Hald, J. L. Sorensen, L. Leich and E. S. Polzik for details.]
