Abstract
Trivalent titanium substituted for aluminum in sapphire shows a promise of usefulness for application as solid state tunable laser material. The major problem limiting usefulness of this material is optical loss in the lasing wavelength. This optical loss is caused by broad band absorption extending across wavelength range from 660nm to 1000nm (fig. 1). While the origin of this absorption cannot be positively assigned, available evidence indicates that it may be related to point defects present in the host material.
