Abstract
Pumping models for quasi-three-level lasers are used to show that the optical efficiency of Q-switched Yb:YAG lasers should be at least as high as diode-pumped Nd:YAG lasers if properly designed. The impact of quasi-three level laser transition on the design of cw- pumped repetitively Q-switched lasers is analyzed and it has been found that "effective" lifetime shortening observed in these devices is expected because of bleaching.
