Abstract
Development of a solid-state, white-light laser using the color center laser medium, LiF:F2+**, is discussed. Spectroscopic analysis reveals LiF:F2+** is an excellent medium for superbroadband (800-1300 nm) or white-light (400-650 nm) lasing. Two color centers, standard F2+** and a new F2+**-like center, are shown to be responsible for this superbroadband range of tunability. Under proper pump excitation from an Alexandrite laser, both centers can be simultaneously excited to theoretically produce superbroadband lasing in the infrared (800-1300 nm) from a single active medium. Second harmonic generation of this fundamental output produces superbroadband lasing in the visible spectral region (400-650 nm). The experimental lasing results provide good agreement with theory.
