Abstract
In neural diseases such as glaucoma, nerve fibers can lose their functionality before cell death occurs. Hence, measurement of transient changes of nerve fiber birefringence as an indicator of functionality may allow detection of neural diseases at an early stage. A fiber-based phasesensitive optical low coherence reflectometry is proposed for measurement of birefringence change associated with action potential propagation in nerves.
