Abstract
Use of a laser Doppler lidar as a remote wind sensor entails assessing the Doppler content of laser backscatter from the ambient atmospheric aerosol, assumed to drift with the wind. Design goal for the NOAA pulsed Doppler CO2 lidar was a capability to measure the radial wind speed to ranges in excess of 20 km. The device is van-mounted and currently deployed as a field measuring system.
