Abstract
The cw HF optical resonance transfer laser (ORTL) has been described previously.1 The present paper describes results of a series of experiments designed to address the issue of potential energy conversion efficiency. The effects of the medium temperature, composition, and gasdynamic parameters and of pump laser intensity were investigated. To address these issues, the previously reported geometry was changed to a new configuration which combines long absorption length and long gain length. The higher overall efficiency that was achieved in this configuration allowed a wider range of parameter variation without failing below the threshold for laser oscillation.
