Abstract
McCall1 pointed out and demonstrated in a hybrid device that an optical bistable device can pulsate provided the nonlinearity has two contributions of opposite signs and different time constants. McCall also suggested the use of an intrinsic bistable device in which an electronic effect causes switching from one state to another, but a slower thermal effect of opposite sign prevents either state from being stable.
