Abstract
Now that two-photon laser oscillation has been observed,1 the theory of the device is more relevant than ever. It is well-known that single-photon homogeneously broadened lasers can undergo chaotic single-wavelength instabilities.2 Specifically, the nonlinear polarization causes more than one frequency to have net gain and to be resonant for a single wavelength in the cavity. The calculation can be based on the gain coefficient for side modes that straddle a centrally tuned strong mode.
