Abstract
Nd:YAG laser systems operating at high average power must be designed to accommodate thermal lensing of YAG for efficient energy removal. Recent results1 have shown that the thermal lens formed by a YLF rod under moderate input powers (700 W) is 1/10 of that of an identically pumped YAG rod. Thermal distortion of a laser rod reduces the available TEM00 mode volume necessitating the use of intraresonator compensating optics suited for a specific thermal operating point.
