Abstract
Beam steering using twin-striped lasers1 has been investigated by many researchers for stability and miniaturization of optoelectronic systems. However, beam steering in these lasers frequently suffers from uncontrolled discontinuous deflection2 and a high background light level.1 These undesirable properties result directly from instability of lateral lasing modes and basically arise from the positive-feedback nature inherent in lasing oscillation. To solve this problem we have developed a traveling-wave phase controller, where the lateral-index distribution is controlled by adjusting the carrier injection, resulting in a deflection of traveling light.
