Abstract
We report on what we believe to be the first all solid state (holosteric) source of sub-picosecond light pulses. In this scheme pulses from a mode-locked and Q-switched diode laser pumped Nd:YAG laser operating at 1.3μm are propagated down a single mode silica fibre. The power in the pump laser is sufficient to generate copious amounts of Stokes radiation at 1.4μm due to the stimulated Raman effect. Being in the negatively dispersive region of the fibre this pulse can propagate in a soliton-like manner and is compressed in the fibre. The shortest pulse that we have observed in our preliminary experiments is 265fsec and is well fitted to a sech2 pulse.
