Abstract
Earlier works based on the use of antennas have extended radio and microwave techniques into the terahertz regime.1,2 We demonstrate an alternative approach, whereby optical techniques are adapted to terahertz frequencies.3 Our approach is distinguished by excellent time resolution and essentially complete collection of the radiation We locate an ultrafast point dipole source (Hertzian dipole) at the focal point of a spherical lens or mirror which can either focus the radiated pulse onto a detector or collimate the emission to produce a beam of freely propagating ultrashort electrical pulses.
