Abstract
The generation of short pulse CO2 laser radiation has been demonstrated previously by a variety of mode-locking and switching techniques.1 Most of this work was devoted to pulsed lasers where a high operating gas pressure and large gain bandwidth may be obtained. However, in applications where short laser pulses are used to probe fast processes the ease of using a cw mode-locked laser is often highly appreciated.
