Abstract
We describe a technique for coherently summing output from a multiple gain element parallel amplifier array into a single output beam. The technique can make use of variations on any interferometer type, modified for the inclusion of gain in at least one arm of the interferometer. The technique allows for an arbitrarily large number of parallel gain elements to be combined as well as preamplifier stages for optimal utilization of the available gain. The technique is applicable to most laser media and bulk optical as well as guided-wave optical systems.
