Abstract
The advent of high power laser diodes has resuited in an explosion of new laser systems and uses. In the mid IR region, 1.5-5 µm, several new transitions have been demonstrated with laser diode pumping, and theoretically several more are possible. Each transition has energy transfer processes which can affect the design of the laser system, especially when the applications of the systems require specialized wavelength and temporal outputs.
