Abstract
Phase modulation of TM polarization in III–V compounds has been barely investigated. One reason is the absence of the linear electrooptic effect for electrical fields oriented along the normal crystallographic (100) direction. A second reason lies in the high absorption associated with (metallic) Schottky barrier contacts. The use of pn junctions is quite attractive. However, it poses problems in fabricating good rib waveguide devices.
