Abstract
We have begun experiments to support the design of large Nd:glass amplifiers for multimegajoule inertial confinement fusion laser systems. Amplified spontaneous emission limits the largest practical size of a single aperture disk amplifier to ~30 cm. As a result, even optimistic projections of 15-20 J/cm2 for an operating fluence imply that hundreds of individual apertures will be required to deliver several megajoules. To reduce complexity and cost, we plan to group several individual beams into one beamline, each of which uses a single segmented-aperture amplifier.
