Abstract
For efficient flashlamp pumped operation of Nd3+ lasers it is advantageous to absorb the pump radiation by doped Cr3+ ions (donors) and transfer the excitation energy nonradiatively to the laser Nd3+ ions (acceptors). This has been demonstrated successfully by Cr,Nd:GSGG. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of the laser host should be as high as possible for increased repetition rate capabilities. Due to its lighter constituents Cr,Nd:Y-SAG has this advantage over GSGG.
