Abstract
Since Jan, 1988 two Italian backscattering lidars have operated in Antarctica: in the U.S. base Amundsen-Scott at the South Pole; at the Italian base at Terra Nova Bay during the summer of 1988 and presently at the French base of Dumont d'Urville. These systems have been built, respectively, by G. Fiocco's group at the University of Rome and by our group at IROE of CNR within a wide research program on atmospheric studies carried out by the Italian National Program for Antarctic Research. One main objective of such programs is to contribute to the solution of the ozone hole problem. A complex DIAL system for carrying out ozone concentration measurements in the ozone hole is presently being built with Italo-French cooperation with the Service d'Aeronomie of CNRS.
