Abstract
Two-mode fiber interferometry using highly elliptical core fibers is used in sensing electric fields and voltages. Significant performance parameters are compared to conventional fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometers, in particular, we investigate linearity, the dynamic range as well as the sensitivity to the environmental vibrational noise background with emphasis on the low frequency range (0–1000 Hz). This range is of special interest for monitoring power line ac voltages. We further examine the possibility of tailoring the sensor parameters to optimize the sensor sensitivity for specific demands.
