Abstract
Traveling-wave laser amplifiers (TWA) with angled facets were demonstrated as a feasible approach to the fabrication of devices with extremely low modal effective reflectivity.1,2 Most reported devices were fabricated at predetermined tilt angles of 7° or 10°.1,2 However, modal reflectivity calculations predict very sharp minima in the modal reflectivity as a function of the tilt angle.3 As a result of that, it is desirable to have simple design rules to correlate the waveguide parameters, tilt angle, and optimal coating conditions in order to achieve lowest reflectivity values for both TE and TM modes, with maximum tolerance in the fabrication.
