Abstract
The technical limitations imposed by working through laparoscopic instruments make conventional suture techniques time consuming and difficult to use. Stapling technology will certainly improve this situation, but there are many situations (i.e., closure of a common duct incision) where this approach will not be suitable because of size and access considerations. Dye-enhanced laser-activated tissue glue technology has been shown in our laboratory to be a reliable and reproducible method of achieving high-strength, watertight closures of a variety of tissues, including vascular, tracheobronchial, and gastrointestinal (colon, small intestine, esophagus, and biliary).
