Abstract
For many laser surgical applications involving fiber optics, there is a need for a tip that will produce large, ablated channels when connected to the end of a small diameter, flexible optical fiber. Previous devices to meet this need have included the ball-tip device (Advanced Cardiovascular Systems, Santa Clara, Ca.), and the sapphire-tipped device (Surgical Laser Technologies, Malvern, Pa.). There are sufficient difficulties with each of these devices to warrant continued development efforts.
