Abstract

The development of laser diode ignition (LDI) as a replacement for low energy electrical ignition has been underway for several years. LDI devices provide added safety since they can be designed to eliminate the threat of accidental firing due to electrostatic discharges and stray electramagnetic radiation. Work on LDI includes the characterization of explosive powders, the investigation of optical ignition requirements, the development of laser diodes to meet these requirements, and the design and fabrication of hermetically sealed explosive devices.
