Abstract
There is currently much interest in communicating optically between electronics. The use of free-space for optically interconnected electronics allows the use of two-dimensional arrays of beams. With such an array, large parallelism is achievable. The number of beams that it is possible to use is currently limited to a few thousand by the optical power supply, thermal considerations, and the field of view of lenses. Much progress remains to be made before the ultimate limit of perhaps ten thousand channels can be realized.
