Abstract
Because of the problems associated with delivering the output from large area diode arrays to the ends of small laser rods, diode-pumped, rod-laser oscillators capable of delivering output energies of 100 ml or more in a Q-switched pulse have generally used a transverse-diode-pump geometry. This transverse pump geometry puts very stringent requirements on the diode wavelength tolerance because of the short absorption lengths available. Beam quality can also be negatively impacted because of axially asymmetric gain profiles that can be imprinted on the output beams. We have developed and demonstrated a scalable end-pumping technology applicable to solid- state lasers that addresses these drawbacks of the transverse-pump geometry.
