Abstract
The optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is an important means of producing tunable laser radiation. We have reported the operating characteristics of a temperature tuned OPO in MgO:LiNbO3.1,2 In our experiments we found that the parametric pulse duration was generally narrower or wider than that of the pump pulse, and that the pulse shape was not symmetrical. Typically, parametric light (signal and idle) pulse duration in the experiment was ~8 ns when the MgO:LiNbO3 OPO pumped by a doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (532 nm) with pulse duration 10 ns. This phenomenon was also found by many researchers studying the properties of an OPO in a variety of crystals, for example, KTP,3 BBO,4 and LBO,5 etc.
