Abstract
High-pressure CO2 lasers offer the possibility of almost complete tunability between 9 and 11µm when operated above 10 atmosphere pressures. These lasers are capable of delivering intense beams of energies exceeding the joule level and of generating subpicosecond pulses.1 The lifetime of the gain of such lasers is rather short (around 500 nanoseconds); henee, to reach the saturation level, the gain per roundtrip must significantly exceed the losses.
