Abstract
The non radiative energy transfer processes present in rare-earth and transition metal doped laser materials are now routinely being used to increase the efficiency of the laser. While the physics of such processes are well understood for low dopant concentrations, modern laser materials are often doped with large concentrations of ions to maximize the energy transfer, leading to some unexpected results for the measured energy transfer rates.
