Abstract
With the development of erbium-doped fiber optical amplifiers (EDFAs), the unregenerated transmission distance of a lightwave system is no longer limited by fiber loss. Laboratory demonstrations have shown that it is now possible to transmit 5 Gbit/s from any spot on earth to any other spot without regeneration.1
