Abstract
The Synrad all-metal laser structure is shown in Fig. 1. It has a Fresnel number of about unity. Although not a waveguide laser, this structure has a weak off reflection off its four side walls that enclose the 5×5 mm2 laser gain region. These effects contribute to the attenuation of the fundamental laser mode to the extent that it is a significant fraction of the cavity loss due to the output coupling. We can manipulate this part of the attenuation to enhance the polarization purity.
