Abstract
Ultrahigh-speed optical transmission technologies will be the key issue to construct a new generation of the optical communications systems such as broad band-ISDN (B-ISDN) that will be demanded in the 21st century. In order to realize such ultrahigh-speed optical transmission systems, some new technologies are needed including all-optical techniques for ultrashort pulse generation, high-speed timing extraction, and all-optical multi/demultiplexing. The key technologies used to realize 100 Gbit/s optical transmission are reviewed together with experimental results.
