Phase-noise reduction in multigigahertz pulsations of injection-tracked DFB lasers

Abstract

Several schemes for optical pulses have been proposed so far, i.e., sideband injection locking of Fabry Perot lasers,1 KF-driven two-mode DFB lasers2 and optically filtered mode-locked lasers.3 Unfortunately those solutions lack continuous tunability. An almost ideal tunability is achieved by beating two independent laser diodes,4 but a major drawback is the poor linewidth characteristics of the beat note. CW-laser light injection into another cw-laser produces output power oscillations5 for frequency detunings outside the locking range. The method does not suffer from such disadvantages.
