Abstract

We have proposed and demonstrated that optical coherence function can be synthesized by direct frequency modulation of a laser diode LD. By using this technique, the studies of photonic sensing systems1,2,4,5 and photonic information processing systems3 have been carried out both theoretically and experimentally. These systems have simple construction, variable resolution and wide dynamic range, and need no mechanical-moving-parts nor calculation. Recently we have also shown a phase modulation of the reference lightwave can make it possible to scan the coherence function without changing its shape.4,5 This technique improves the performance of their photonic systems.
