Abstract
A packaged optical receiver using a silicon avalanche photodetector has been designed and tested for use in an experimental fiber optical communication system operating at 45 Mb/sec. The receiver package described here has been designed to have good optical sensitivity and large dynamic range, to have convenient optical and electrical interfacing, to operate from ±5-V power supplies, and to be readily adaptable for reproducible, reliable, and inexpensive manufacture.
