Abstract

Until now, the majority of the acoustooptic modulators employed the interaction of light with bulk ultrasonic waves in solids and liquids. As a demonstration and test of the utility of surface acoustic waves (SAW) for light modulation applications, the high diffraction efficiency achieved with a novel side-entry laser probing technique1,2 was utilized to fabricate a number of elastooptic devices. These included a modulator utilized in a TV communication system and a convolver for a signal processing system.3
