Abstract

It is well known that the build up of Gordon-Haus timing jitter induced by repeated amplification along a soliton fibre link can be significantly reduced by the inclusion of fixed frequency filters in the system [1]. Here we present the first experimental results which show that it is possible to use fibre Bragg gratings as the only filters in such a system and that they compare favourably with bulk devices in terms of jitter reduction. The advantages of these devices are that they are fibre based, have low polarisation dependent loss and low insertion loss. In addition, the post-fabrication exposure technique [2] makes it easy to produce high finesse fibre filters whose pass-band characteristics can be chosen arbitrarily making them compatible with sliding frequency configurations. Fabry-Perot and multiple pass-band devices can also be written in a single fibre making them compatible with WDM systems[3].
