Abstract
Longitudinally diode laser-pumped solid-state lasers have been demonstrated to achieve high efficiency with a F2-:LiF passive Q-switch [1]. As power scaling possibilities of end-pumped configurations are limited by the thermally induced stress fracture of the laser material, transversal pumping schemes are the system of choice to achieve high average powers. The use of composite laser rods consisting of a hexagonal Nd:YAG core surrounded by an undoped YAG is expected to improve the relatively poor beam quality typical for side pumped solid-state lasers.
