Abstract
Nonlinear directional couplers have been extensively investigated as possible all-optical switching devices. Power dependent nonlinear switching has been demonstrated in two and three-core couplers [1], and more recently, self-localization of the optical field has also been observed in a nonlinear waveguide array [2]. In this paper we report our recent experimental results with arrays of non-uniform waveguides, in which the width of one of the waveguides has been intentionally modified, giving raise to a series of novel switching characteristics.
