Abstract
Plastic optical fibre (POF) for short distance data communication is attracting interest due to ease-of-alignment and installation Emitters around 650 nm are required due to a minimum in transmission loss at this wavelength. Resonant-cavity LEDs (RCLEDs) at 650nm have been used for 500 Mbps transmission but at higher speeds lasers will be required, with vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) being the preferred choice [1]. Recently 670nm VCSEL based transmission down 50m of POF was demonstrated at 1 Gbps [2]. Good performance was obtained, limited by the POF attenuation and the receiver being used. This paper presents DC and large signal modulation results on 670nm oxidised VCSEL, packaged in TO-46 package
