Abstract
For space applications, solid-state lasers with high electrical-to-optical efficiencies are needed. Diode pumped Neodymium-lasers at 1µm and especially Nd:YAG are able to meet this requirement. The background radiation present in space can lead to serious damage in laser crystals. It has been shown that Nd: YAG, especially with Cr3+ codoping is – to some extent – insensitive to radiation damage[1].
