Abstract
High power thulium lasers are required for a variety of applications, of particular importance is their use as pump sources for holmium based lasers, both crystalline; YAG and YLF, and fibre based. When employed as pump sources it is essential that they are extremely robust and have excellent spectral and spatial characteristics. The pump brightness and efficiency requirements also position thulium-doped fibre (TDF) lasers as fundamental pump sources for the production and power scaling of both high average power and high pulse energy mid IR sources.
