Abstract
Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting semi-conductor lasers (VECSELs) are of high interest for passive mode-locking (PML). They consist of coupled cavities that have unique filtering properties. We demonstrate that these can have profound implications on the pulse shape causing a new kind of instability for the pulse train. We focus on a MIXSEL system here for simplicity and clarity, however we stress that we found the same phenomena for a closely related VCSEL-RSAM system.
