The Infrared Doppler Lidar: An important tool for experimental investigation of aircraft wake vortices

Abstract

Aircraft wake vortices are a severe air-traffic problem. Especially during landing and take-off, the strong vortices of heavy aircraft present a potential hazard to other aircraft following closely behind. Vortex imposed separation standards have been established. But they will prove to be a strong restriction on future capacity demands at major airports.
