Abstract
CALIOP, onboard of CALIPSO satellite, started collecting lidar backscatter profile of the atmosphere and ocean since June 2006. CALIOP collects ocean surface backscatter at 70 m footprint and thus provide accurate sea surface mean square slope (linearly proportional to wind speed) estimates at high spatial resolution. This paper introduces the CALIOP sea surface wind speed measurement and database, as well as the potential applications.
