Abstract
The lifting of the degeneracy between different exciton spin states in semiconductor quantum wells (QW), which occurs when a magnetic field is applied, is usually hard to detect. The major difficulty is that at small and moderate fields (B < 10 T), this splitting is smaller than the exciton linewidth. This is especially pronounced in narrow QW samples, where the inhomogeneous broadening is large because of well width fluctuations. Because of this difficulty, only very little was known on the exciton Zeeman splitting in narrow QW in low magnetic fields until recently.
