Abstract
Construction of atomic traps allows for storing in an 'empty' space a relatively large number of atoms, being almost at rest. The density of trapped atoms is typically of the order of 1/λ3 (λ is a laser wavelength), therefore, the trapped atoms form a medium whose optical properties can be quite different from properties of standard optical media.
