Abstract
Polarization measurements in atomic media are among the most sensitive ones in atomic physics with parity nonconservation experiments and optical magnetometry being just a couple of examples. Since both the probe light and the atomic spin canonical variables obey certain commutation relations, there are limits, sometimes referred to as standard quantum limits, which set fundamental boundaries on the precision of measurements involving probe light and an ensemble of atomic spins.
