Inducing electron-photon correlations at an integrated photonics microresonator

Abstract

The coupling of free electrons to confined optical modes enables the nanoscale mapping of near-fields via spontaneous or stimulated inelastic electron-light scattering [1] as well as the modulation of electron beams by highly populated coherent optical states [2]. The unique combination of integrated photonics with electron microscopy facilitated a significant boost of the underlying electron-light interaction strength through resonant enhancement as well as velocity phase matching [3]. However, pushing the interaction to the single electron-single photon regime and demonstrating electron-photon entanglement [4] remains a standing challenge.
